From Kansai Airport to Osaka with a kid and luggage: taxi or train?

We took a taxi, and after a long flight with a tired 9-year-old we would do it again: door to door, no stairs, no changes. It is the most expensive way, because Kansai Airport is far out in the bay. The trains are the cheaper choice and reach central Osaka in under an hour: Nankai to Namba, JR to Tennoji, Osaka Station and Shin-Osaka.

Our evening arrival
We landed at Kansai Airport at 5:44 pm on February 24. Passport control, bags, then the taxi rank outside arrivals. By about 8 pm we were at the hotel and out again, walking through a covered shopping street in Osaka, tired and hungry and very happy. The signs at the airport are in English and Japanese, with clear pictures, so even our 9-year-old could see where to go.

Arriving in the evening was good with a kid. There is nothing to do except get to the hotel, eat and sleep. The next morning he woke up in Japan, ready to explore.
Why we took a taxi
After a long flight, with a 9-year-old and big suitcases, we did not want stairs, platforms and a change of train in the dark. The taxi took us from the airport door to the hotel door. Japanese taxis are clean, the doors open by themselves, and drivers do not expect tips.
The catch is the price. Kansai Airport sits on an island in the bay, so the ride into Osaka is long and the fare is high. Check it for your hotel before you fly, so it is a choice and not a surprise. For a family it can make sense for one ride, at the end of a long travel day.
If you take the train
The airport railway station is connected to the arrivals building. Two railway companies run trains into the city:
- Nankai goes to Namba. Best if you stay around Dotonbori and Namba.
- JR goes to Tennoji, Osaka Station and Shin-Osaka. The JR Haruka express continues to Kyoto. Best if you stay near Osaka Station or Shin-Osaka, or if you go straight to Kyoto.
Both have faster express trains with reserved seats and regular rapid trains. With a kid and big suitcases, the express is more comfortable: you sit, the bags have a place, and nobody stands for an hour after a long flight.
With luggage on the train:
- One hand free per adult. One suitcase each, and a backpack. The kid carries their own small backpack.
- Use elevators. Every big station has them. Follow the elevator signs, not the crowd on the stairs.
- Do the last part by taxi if the hotel is far from your arrival station.
How the big stations work in general is in trains in Japan with a kid.
IC cards
IC cards are rechargeable travel cards you tap at the gates. In the Osaka area the JR card is called ICOCA, in Tokyo it is Suica, and they work in both regions. If you take the train from the airport, buy them at the airport station. If you take a taxi like we did, buy them on your first morning at a big station. Kids pay child fares only with a child card, which you get at a ticket office.
The first dinner
We ate sushi near the hotel: eel, tuna and seared salmon with mayo. Nothing fancy, and exactly right. For more on how we ate, read eating in Japan with a kid.

Planning the whole trip?
Why we flew into Osaka and not Tokyo is in Osaka or Tokyo first with kids.

What we'd do differently
- We would check the taxi fare to our hotel before the flight. Kansai Airport is far from the city, and it is a long ride.
- We would buy the IC cards on the first morning in the city, at a big station with a ticket office, instead of thinking about it at the airport.
Where to stay in Japan with kids
By area, not by hotel. We don't rate hotels.
- Osaka, Namba: Dotonbori and street food at the door, direct trains to Kansai Airport.
- Osaka, around Osaka Station or Shin-Osaka: Fast starts for day trips to Kyoto and Himeji.
- Tokyo, Shinjuku: The biggest train hub in Tokyo, lots of choice, Omoide Yokocho five minutes away.
- Tokyo, Shibuya: Right by the crossing. Busy and bright, kids usually love it.

Airport Mode
Turn the wait at the gate into a mission. Pick your time, the kids play until boarding.
Questions parents ask
How long does it take from Kansai Airport to Osaka?
Under an hour by train or by taxi to central Osaka, depending on traffic and the station. With passport control and bags, plan about two hours from landing to the hotel.
Is a taxi from Kansai Airport worth it with kids?
It is expensive, because the airport is far from the city. After a long flight with a tired kid and big suitcases, for us it was worth it: door to door, nobody carried bags through stations.
Should you take JR or Nankai from Kansai Airport?
Go by your hotel. Nankai goes to Namba, the best for Dotonbori. JR goes to Tennoji, Osaka Station and Shin-Osaka, and the JR Haruka express continues to Kyoto.
Can you take big suitcases on the airport trains?
Yes. The airport trains are used to luggage, and the express trains have luggage space. Avoid the morning and evening rush in the city if you can.
Where do you buy an IC card at Kansai Airport?
At the airport railway station, at the ticket machines or ticket offices. Child cards with child fares are bought at a ticket office.
What if you land late at night?
Check the last trains on the Kansai Airport access page before you fly. When the trains are finished, there are buses and taxis.
