Fushimi Inari with kids: how far up do you need to go?

Short answer

Not far. We spent about 35 minutes among the torii gates, walked through the famous Senbon Torii and a bit further, and turned back while our son was still enjoying it. The full loop over the mountain takes two to three hours; with kids, the first part gives you the gates and the photos.

Our 35 minutes

We arrived at Fushimi Inari Taisha just before 11 am on Sunday, March 1, on our Kyoto day trip from Osaka. We walked up from the big gate, through the main shrine buildings, into the double rows of the Senbon Torii (a thousand gates), and a little beyond. At 11:29 we were back at the bottom.

It was enough. Our son had his tunnel of orange gates, the photos were taken, and nobody was tired. The rest of Kyoto was still ahead.

How far is the whole mountain?

Mount Inari is about 233 meters high, and the gates go all the way to the top and around. The full loop takes two to three hours, with a lot of stone steps. Above the first viewpoint, the crowds thin out a lot.

For families, think of it in three parts:

  • The bottom: the main gate, the shrine buildings, the start of the Senbon Torii. 15 to 20 minutes.
  • The Senbon Torii and a bit beyond: the famous double row. 30 to 45 minutes there and back. This is what we did.
  • The first big viewpoint and the summit: for kids who like hiking. Two hours or more.

Small things kids notice

  • Fox statues. Foxes are the messengers of Inari and stand everywhere, often with a key or a scroll in their mouth. Counting them works well on the steps.
  • Writing on the gates. Each gate was donated by a person or a company, and their names are written on the back. Walk the way down and you see them.
  • Stone lanterns. Old, mossy and everywhere.

Getting there

From Kyoto Station, the JR Nara Line goes one stop to Inari Station, right across from the main gate. From Osaka, the Keihan line also stops at Fushimi-Inari Station, a short walk away. How we did Kyoto as a day trip is in Osaka as a base for Kyoto and Himeji.

The rest of our Kyoto day

From Fushimi Inari we went to Higashiyama, the old district on the east side of Kyoto. We had ramen at about 2:45 pm, walked the sloping lanes up to Yasaka Pagoda, and our son drew an omikuji, a paper fortune, at a shrine. We took the train back to Osaka at about 5:15 pm.

Our advice

Go early, go only as far as the fun lasts, and turn around while everyone is still smiling. For the full trip, see Japan with a 9-year-old.

What we'd do differently

  • We would arrive by 9 am. By 11 it was busy at the bottom.
  • We would go one gate section further, to the first viewpoint, if our son had a good morning.

Where to stay in Japan with kids

By area, not by hotel. We don't rate hotels.

  • Osaka, Namba: Dotonbori and street food at the door, direct trains to Kansai Airport.
  • Osaka, around Osaka Station or Shin-Osaka: Fast starts for day trips to Kyoto and Himeji.
  • Tokyo, Shinjuku: The biggest train hub in Tokyo, lots of choice, Omoide Yokocho five minutes away.
  • Tokyo, Shibuya: Right by the crossing. Busy and bright, kids usually love it.

Questions parents ask

How long does it take to walk Fushimi Inari?

The full loop to the top of Mount Inari and back takes two to three hours. Just the first gates and back takes 30 to 45 minutes, which is what we did.

Is it worth going to the top of Fushimi Inari with kids?

For older kids who like hiking, maybe. The gates get quieter and the steps go on and on. For us, the first part was the magic, and we kept energy for the rest of Kyoto.

What is the best time to visit Fushimi Inari with kids?

Early morning. The shrine is open all day and night, and before 9 am it is much calmer. By late morning the bottom part is crowded.

Is Fushimi Inari free?

Yes, there is no entrance fee for the shrine and the gates.

How do you get to Fushimi Inari from Osaka?

By train to Kyoto, then the JR Nara Line one stop to Inari Station, right at the shrine gate. The Keihan line from Osaka also stops at Fushimi-Inari Station, a short walk away.

Is Fushimi Inari stroller friendly?

Only the bottom area. The paths through the gates have many stone steps, so a carrier is better for small children.
