How many days do you need in Japan with kids? Our 11-day split

Short answer

Eleven days worked for us: seven nights in Osaka with day trips to Himeji and Kyoto, then three nights in Tokyo. For a first trip with kids that includes both Osaka and Tokyo, plan at least ten days. Next time we would give Tokyo one or two more nights.

Our 11 days, day by day

  • Day 1 (Feb 24): evening arrival at Kansai Airport, taxi to the hotel in Osaka, sushi nearby.
  • Day 2: easy day. Umeda and its underground malls, a set lunch, Dotonbori in the late afternoon.
  • Day 3: Universal Studios Japan, from opening.
  • Day 4: Osaka Castle and the Kaiyukan aquarium, ramen for dinner.
  • Day 5: day trip to Himeji by Shinkansen.
  • Day 6: Kyoto: Fushimi Inari in the morning, Higashiyama and Yasaka Pagoda in the afternoon.
  • Day 7: Osaka again: Shinsekai, claw machines, Dotonbori at night.
  • Day 8 (March 3): Shinkansen to Tokyo, a rainy evening in Shinjuku.
  • Day 9: Ueno: picnic, the science museum, the first cherry blossoms, Akihabara in the evening.
  • Day 10: our big Tokyo day: Fuji from Shinjuku, Tokyo Tower, teamLab and Shibuya.
  • Day 11 (March 6): flight home from Haneda.

Why seven nights in Osaka worked

One suitcase unpacked for a whole week. Himeji is about 30 minutes from Shin-Osaka by Shinkansen, and Kyoto is close by train too, so we never needed to move hotels for them. How the day trips worked is in Osaka as a base for Kyoto and Himeji.

Osaka also gave us two slow days: the first full day after the flight, and the day after the two day trips. Both were needed. A 9-year-old can do a lot, but not a big day every day for a week and a half.

Why three nights in Tokyo was too short

The move day eats most of a day: checkout, the train, finding the hotel, and in our case rain. The departure day is gone too. That left us two real Tokyo days. We filled them well, but Tokyo is huge, and we left with a list.

If you have fewer or more days

7 days: pick one region. Osaka with Kyoto and Himeji, or Tokyo with a day trip. Do not try both.

10 to 12 days: our split, with one more night in Tokyo if you can.

14 days or more: add a few nights in Kyoto instead of a day trip, or a slower stop between the cities. Our own Kyoto list had Arashiyama, the Kimono Forest and Kinkaku-ji on it, and we did not get to them.

Rules that kept the days working

  • One big thing a day, booked for the morning.
  • No two big days in a row more than twice.
  • Evening plans stay loose: dinner near the hotel is a perfectly good plan.

The season matters too. We went at the end of February, with plum blossoms in Himeji and the first cherry blossoms in Tokyo. More in Japan in late February with kids.

What we'd do differently

  • We would give Tokyo four or five nights instead of three. There was more we wanted to see than we had days for.
  • We would keep the single hotel change. Packing up with a kid takes half a morning.
  • We would plan Kyoto as two days, not one.

Where to stay in Japan with kids

By area, not by hotel. We don't rate hotels.

  • Osaka, Namba: Dotonbori and street food at the door, direct trains to Kansai Airport.
  • Osaka, around Osaka Station or Shin-Osaka: Fast starts for day trips to Kyoto and Himeji.
  • Tokyo, Shinjuku: The biggest train hub in Tokyo, lots of choice, Omoide Yokocho five minutes away.
  • Tokyo, Shibuya: Right by the crossing. Busy and bright, kids usually love it.

Questions parents ask

Is one week enough for Japan with kids?

For one region, yes: a week in Osaka with day trips, or a week in Tokyo. For Osaka and Tokyo together, a week means a lot of packing and train time. We would not do both in less than ten days.

Is 10 days enough for Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka with kids?

Yes, if you sleep in two places, not three. Stay in Osaka and visit Kyoto by train, then move to Tokyo. That is close to what we did in 11 days.

How many days do you need in Tokyo with kids?

We had three nights and it was not enough. Four or five nights lets you do one big area a day without rushing.

How many days do you need in Osaka with kids?

Three or four days for Osaka itself (Universal Studios, the castle, the aquarium, Dotonbori), plus a day for each day trip.

Should you change hotels a lot in Japan?

We changed once and we were glad. Day trips by train from one base are easy in Japan, and unpacking only twice saved a lot of energy.

How many sights a day with a kid?

One big one, plus whatever happens around it. That was our rule, and the days we broke it were our worst.
