# Japan in late February and early March with kids: what to expect

> Yes. We traveled from February 24 to March 6 and had cool days, mostly dry weather, plum blossoms in Himeji, the first early cherry blossoms in Tokyo, a clear view of Mount Fuji and Hinamatsuri sweets in the shops. Pack warm layers and an umbrella: we had one rainy day.

## The weather we had

We were in Japan from February 24 to March 6, 2026. Most days were cool and dry, a mix of grey skies and bright blue ones. Universal Studios and Osaka Castle were grey. Himeji, Kyoto and Ueno had blue skies. It rained once, on March 3, the day we moved to Tokyo, and the evening in West Shinjuku was wet and dark.

Typical daytime highs in Osaka and Tokyo at this time of year are around 50 to 57°F (10 to 14°C). In the sun in the afternoon it felt warmer. In the morning, in the shade or at the station, it was cold.

## Plum blossoms

Plum trees bloom before the cherries, from February. At Himeji Castle on February 28, red camellias and plum trees were in full color around the walls, and Koko-en garden had a weeping plum covered in pink.

Plum blossoms are a bit smaller and rounder than cherry blossoms, and many smell sweet. A good thing to look for with kids. Our Himeji day is in [Himeji Castle day trip with kids](https://wedgoback.com/japan/himeji-castle-day-trip-with-kids/).

## The first cherry blossoms

The famous cherry blossom season in Tokyo and Osaka is usually from late March to early April. In early March, most trees are still bare. But some early varieties bloom weeks ahead. On March 4 we found them in full pink bloom at the entrance of Ueno Park, and on March 5 around Azabudai Hills. More in [Ueno with a kid](https://wedgoback.com/japan/ueno-with-kids-museum-and-cherry-blossoms/).

You get the blossoms without the biggest crowds of the main season. A real bonus.

## Clear days for Fuji

Winter and early spring often have the clearest air of the year. On March 5 we saw Mount Fuji from the free deck of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in West Shinjuku, white and sharp above the city. Keep one Tokyo day flexible and use the first clear morning. See [our best day in Tokyo](https://wedgoback.com/japan/one-perfect-day-in-tokyo-with-a-kid/).

## Hinamatsuri on March 3

March 3 is Hinamatsuri, the Girls' Day festival. Families set up displays of dolls in traditional dress, and for a few days the shops are full of seasonal sweets in pink, white and green. We tried a Hinamatsuri parfait from a convenience store on our first evening in Tokyo.

## What to pack for kids

- **A warm jacket** and a sweater or fleece underneath.
- **A hat** for cold mornings.
- **Comfortable shoes** that can handle a wet day.
- **A small umbrella,** or buy one at any convenience store when it rains.
- **Layers you can take off.** Trains, shops and museums are warm inside.

## Crowds

Outside the main cherry blossom weeks and school holidays, late February felt busy but relaxed. The big sights still had lines, but nothing like spring. For the full plan, see [our 11-day split](https://wedgoback.com/japan/how-many-days-in-japan-with-kids/) and [what I wish I had known](https://wedgoback.com/japan/what-i-wish-id-known-before-japan-with-kids/).

## What we'd do differently

- We would pack one more warm layer for our son. Mornings and evenings were colder than the sunny afternoons suggested.
- We would keep one day in Tokyo flexible for the first clear morning, for Fuji.

## Questions

### Is February a good time to visit Japan with kids?

Late February was great for us: cool, mostly dry, and quieter than cherry blossom season. Make sure it does not clash with your home school holidays or Japanese school holidays.

### What is the weather like in Osaka and Tokyo in late February?

Cool. Typical daytime highs are around 50 to 57°F (10 to 14°C), colder in the morning and evening. We had sunny days, grey days and one rainy day.

### Will you see cherry blossoms in early March?

Not the main bloom, which is usually late March to early April. But early varieties bloom in early March: we saw full pink trees in Ueno Park and around Azabudai Hills.

### Where can you see plum blossoms in late February?

In many gardens and castle grounds. We saw red and pink plum trees in full bloom at Himeji Castle and in Koko-en garden on February 28.

### What is Hinamatsuri?

The Girls' Day festival on March 3. Families display dolls, and shops sell seasonal sweets. Even a convenience store parfait gets a Hinamatsuri version.

### What should kids wear in Japan in late February?

Layers: a warm jacket, a sweater, long pants, comfortable shoes that can get wet, and a hat for the mornings. Afternoons in the sun felt much warmer.
